Compass in the Community
We are proud of the strong track record we have in community engagement. Since 1996 the Compass in the Community programme has recognised the best community-based initiatives run by our businesses and teams across the world, focused on tackling social exclusion, improving employability and promoting sustainability and diversity. The programme rewards those initiatives that have the greatest impact by providing additional funding.
The impact that these programmes continue to have is a testament to the creativity and commitment our people show to developing the communities in which we operate.
Programmes recognised by Compass in the Community in the last year have included:
- All Leisure’s project to support Zoe’s Place, a hospice for babies at Alderhay Hospital, Liverpool in the north-west of England.
- Eurest, Portugal’s holistic approach to community and CSR activity, encompassing a wide range of programmes including a blood donation campaign and “Paint a Smile” to improve conditions in the children’s ward of a local hospital.
- Chartwells in the USA have an ongoing programme with their client, Quinnipac University in Connecticut, to raise funds for various causes including feeding homeless people and Habitat for Humanity.
- The ESS team based at mining company Drummond Ltd, Bogotá, Colombia have instigated the Fishing Lives project, proving how “teaching a man to fish” was much more important than giving him one. The Colombian team helped make the town’s fish breeding programme more productive and standardised by teaching best safety practices and handling procedures, which resulted in larger fish production and better overall fish quality for community consumption and external sale.
- The Eurest team at Stirling Management Centre, Stirling University, Scotland have run the “Hospitality Profession Promotion Programme” for the past three years. More than 300 pupils from three local schools have passed through the on work placements, with some attending one day a week and others progressing to Scottish Vocational Qualifications.
